1st Avenue North Reconstruction

PROJECT DETAILS

LOCATION:
Billings, MT

PROJECT MANAGER:
Kirk Spalding, PE

A WORK IN PROGRESS

Sanderson Stewart is the prime consultant for this MDT project through downtown Billings that will reconstruct 1st Avenue North in entirety (approximately 2 miles) from building face to building face from Division Street to Main Street/Exposition Drive. Currently in the early stages of design, project challenges include limited right-of-way, significant utilities, contaminated soils from multiple sources, undersized storm drain system with constraints on increasing discharge, underground vaults from abandoned steam and business access, significant excavation to restore standard crowned road, traffic sequencing and maintaining business access during construction, and meeting PROWAG in a constrained environment. The project includes significant public involvement, accommodating bicycles, limited landscaping, increasing capacity at a saturated intersection with an improved traffic signal, historic and conventional LED lighting, and screening of alternatives.

The DOT Group’s role includes: Road design, survey (utilizing LiDAR technology), Cadastral COS, hydraulics, traffic engineering, right-of-way design & plans, PS&E, complex drainage design, public involvement, and management of team of specialty subconsultants. Sanderson Stewart’s Branding Studio has also provided graphic design services and a project logo.
