INTERSECTION EVALUATION
Sanderson Stewart was the prime consultant on this project in Billings, Montana, for the Montana Department of Transportation to evaluate traffic operations and geometric design alternatives for the intersection of 6th Avenue North/Bench Boulevard/Main Street in Billings, Montana. The adjacent portion of Main Street is the busiest roadway by volume in the state of Montana and the intersection is a key junction in the commuter route for many Billings residents. It is also critical to the circulation of traffic in and out of nearby MetraPark, a large arena, fairgrounds, and event complex.
THE ADJACENT PORTION OF MAIN STREET IN BILLINGS HEIGHTS IS THE BUSIEST ROADWAY BY VOLUME IN THE STATE OF MONTANA
Sanderson Stewart evaluated alternatives that included underpass, overpass, roundabout and traffic signal configurations. Using state-of-the-art traffic analysis tools and a criteria decision matrix to evaluate other parameters, alternatives were evaluated and ranked. The project also included evaluation of other intersections along the Main Street corridor at 4th Avenue North and 1st Avenue North. The project involved coordination with a steering committee made up of representatives from a number of stakeholders including the City of Billings, Yellowstone County, MetraPark, MDT and the East Billings Urban Renewal District (EBURD).
