EXTRAORDINARY OUTREACH = EXTRAORDINARY RESULTS

Sanderson Stewart is currently working on the design of a corridor with a sidewalk and multi-use trail to help provide connectivity from CDOT Highway 7 to the Town’s elementary and middle schools and community center. Work has included a traffic analysis, survey and locates, conceptual design including inclusive outreach to the diverse community designs plans and modifications for pedestrian and bicycle paths as traffic calming measures and ADA grading. The 100% design is complete and right of way and bid administration is soon to be completed.

The project area includes a significant Spanish-speaking population with many children attending the Town’s schools and community center. Reaching this population through a traditional online survey and project website had proven to be difficult and had limited survey responses, even while offering both English and Spanish versions. Our project team and the Town decided to engage the community in a much more direct way and hosted a picnic near the project area. The project team served the community a meal while explaining the project and offered surveys for the attendees to fill out while they were enjoying the meal. This resulted in a better understanding of the local conditions, building trust with stakeholders, and designing a corridor that served the needs of the community.
