CORPORATE CONNECTS TO NATURE
The world headquarters of Montana-based Kampgrounds of America (KOA) has a new home! Sanderson Stewart’s Commercial Group, Placemaking Studio, and Water Studio collaborated to provide infrastructure solutions and welcoming landscapes that embodied the KOA mission of Connecting People to Nature and Each Other. This LEED accredited project includes a 35,000 SF building and rests on a 2.5-acre knoll in west Billings.
Surrounded by trees and wetlands, the topography of the property provided the opportunity to carve an outdoor KOA University learning space into the hillside below the building’s main floor. An activity lawn, fire pit patio, and other amenities provide spaces for employees to gather and enjoy the outdoors. Among the challenges posed by the site was a major irrigation canal with considerable water seepage. Sanderson Stewart deployed dataloggers prior to the canal’s opening to gather data which assisted the team in designing the site and building to account for groundwater fluctuations.
Within the site, Sanderson Stewart provided field surveying and mapping, civil engineering, and landscape architecture services. In addition, we provided off-site infrastructure designs for the roadway extending to the site, water services, and sewer services. Sanderson Stewart also provided LEED certification assistance for civil and landscape improvements.
