CREATIVE COLLABORATION FOR THE FIRST

COMMUNITY PARK IN MAPLE VALLEY, WASHINGTON

Prior to joining Sanderson Stewart, Erik Sweet, PLA, ASLA (as SLA Landscape Architecture) provided the City of Maple Valley with the following services for the development of Summit Park: park master planning, construction documents, cost estimation, permitting, project management, and construction administration. Not only was this the City’s first active recreation community park, but its first City-built park project. The project was a joint effort by the City, County, and School District; this included both joint funding and an inter-local agreement for usage of space wherein the School District allowed it’s parking lot to be used for the park, and the fields of Summit Park were allowed to be utilized by the School District. This project included 15.2 acres of active recreation sports fields (including turf), new LED sports field lighting, parking lots, a dog park, the community’s first fully accessible ADA playground, sports court, largest competition skate park bowl in the Pacific Northwest, stormwater management, and trail access to regional trail system which included access to a high school, and adjacent neighborhoods. The site also included a multi-use building housing restrooms, concessions, and parks maintenance storage.
